Letter from Rufus Austin Putnam, Chichester, to Amos Augustus Phelps, Jan. 19. 1842
Description:
In this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Rufus Austin Putman mentions his correspondence with some of the Massachusetts ministers with regard to the action of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He says some ministers hold a strong position on this matter. Some of them proposed to call a convention of ministers to lay some principles, as well as a gathering of ministers in Boston to consider the “bearings of American slavery on the missionary enterprise.” He asks Phelps’s opinion on this matter. He also discusses plans for a new Congregational paper.
