John Anderson Collins has been quite unwell, but he is answering Maria Weston Chapman's letter regardless of the effect on his health. He presents the text for a resolution of the Board [of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society] supporting the efforts of the Middlesex County Anti-Slavery Society, which intends to hold a special meeting on August 1 at Lowell, in reference to the libel suit brought against the president of this Society as its representative [Dr. Amos Farnsworth]. He reports on meetings to be held in New York state, including a list of cities, with dates and speakers who will attend. Collins said: "The priests have greater control over the people this side of the mountain than that of the eastern side. [Alanson] St. Clair was in this place & preached last Sunday. He told W[illiam] Slade not to countenance us. But strange to say Slade has attended every session but one. The editor of the 3'd party paper told a citizen of Adison that our meeting would be a nonresistant & infidel meeting."
