They are sending greens (holly and evergreen) from the woods that are made into wreaths, and Evelina A. S. Smith is baking a cake for the anti-slavery fair. Even with experienced housekeepers, "the making of a loaf cake is as great an affair as making a barrel of soap." Evelina A. S. Smith has not been well. She hopes that William Lloyd Garrison is out of danger. She comments: "I cannot feel that he will die yet." Evelina A. S. Smith is glad that David Lee Child will be in Washington this winter. She remarks on how interesting Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman is making the Liberator. Evelina A. S. Smith believes: "If two such fine papers as the Liberator & the Standard can be edited by women, we of the same sex need not hang our heads for shame."
