In this letter, Martha Griffith Browne signs her name Mattie Griffith.
Martha Griffith Browne saw Miss (Anne Warren?) Weston at the anniversary meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society and was pleased to see her so "bright & handsome and listen to her clear talk." The tone of the meeting was painful from a "sort of under-current of dissatisfaction & unfriendliness." Martha Griffith Browne will "hail with delight the moment when they conclude to disband." To continue after the amendment has been ratified "would be the madness of folly." Martha Griffith Browne refers to "the cruel assassination of the good President" and praises Lincoln as "that pure and gentle heart, that loving soul." She remarks on the grief of the nation and the sympathy of England and France. Martha Griffith Browne exclaims: "And Jeff Davis' arrest in petticoats!! Did you ever hear of such a farce?"
