UNITS OF MEDITERRANEAN FLEET VISIT IZMIR, TURKEY - On the occasion of the Turkish International Fair in September 1947, several ships of the Mediterranean Fleet put into harbor at Izmir, Turkey. This was the first time that an American warship had been in a Turkish port in about 10 months. One in a series of five. In photo, above, white-hatted sailors from the USS Leyte (CV 32) are being welcomed at the Fleet Landing by residents of Izmir, Turkey. Visit by the American ships was informal.
