William Lloyd Garrison confirms and accepts Anne W. Weston's invitation to dine with her family on Sept. 8, [1874]. It is in Garrison's opinion that "...atrocities are still perpetrated upon the colored people of the South by their old slave masters and rulers; the object being to reduce them as near to their former servile condition as possible by making their possession of the ballot virtually a nullity, and by making it perilous to the safety of any white person to befriend them. Is this our boasted American citizenship?"
