George Thompson is writing this letter while 200 Irishmen are celebrating noisily within earshot; they are celebrating "in honour of Ireland and Ireland's patron Saint." Thompson comments that the newspaper, the [Rochester] "American is out against me." He encloses the article, which is a "gross misrepresentation" of him. Thompson believes the anti-slavery cause here is in the hands of "Rappers." [Rappers is another word for Spiritists, people who try to communicate with the dead to receive information and help from them.] Thompson appraises the work Stephen [Symonds] Foster and Abby [Kelly] Foster. He discloses the project (with the help of Stephen and Abby Foster) of forming a New York Anti-Slavery Society. He wonders why American women lack attraction for him.
